Hi all! It's time for Electrotank to start working on the future version of ElectroServer. We have been designing and planning away for a while but now we need to start finalizing some details.

We want to know if people would be interested in moving ElectroServer into a more IRC-ish model for chatting. Basically this means that users would not have to always be in a room. A user could be in multple rooms (maybe). The user who creates the room would be a moderator for just that room. Being kicked or banned would just kick or ban you from that specific room. Now there would still be server-wide kick and ban as well as server-wide moderators (that have over-riding authority) in addition to these room moderators. I personally feel that this is the right direction to go. It doesn't really increase complexity for developers and does nothing but make the server more flexible and similiar to an established chat system. What are your thoughts?

Please speak your mind, the discussion here WILL shape the future of ElectroServer. Also, please limit the discussion to this one topic. If you have other feature requests, please start a new thread. Thanks!

Hi Mike,
I'm in!
People love to talk, about anything, just to gossip, to say hello or make confidental business talk.
With latest addition to ES features (buddy list e.g) I think ES goes rigth direction. I'm better prepared to write extensive chattish app than make games. Adding feature You mentioned can add some features I really expect form matured chatty server designed to meet all user expectation people can now have.
For example that current limitation You mentioned: I can log only to one room - I can't be at the same time at another place. This can be simulated by extensive use of private messaging but that's not the same thing as You know,

and people love to talk:
I will be developing in near future some basic multichat app if ES4 be born.
regards,
Peter

Thanks Peter. For the longest time, ElectroServer has been focused on games and as such, certain features have been assigned a lesser priority. I agree with you though that ElectroServer is well-suited to straight chat applications particularly once we implement this. Thanks again for the input.

Any other thoughts from everyone out there?

It would be great for webcam and sound intergration

Sadly, webcam and sound is out of our realm as Macromedia has insisted on keeping those aspects of the flash player proprietary. The only way you can do either of those is with Flash Communication Server.

Yes Mike, that would be very good. I agree that Electroserver could be expanded to fullfil more advanced ways and conditions of communications between users.
I'm totally in for the IRC model!
