August 20, 2010
10-aug-jobe-fitcThe FITC conference in San Francisco this month featured speakers from around the world, who gave presentations on all things Flash, mobile apps, cross-platform development, Unity3D, and other hot topics for developers. In Jobe's session, "Latency Hiding in Multiplayer Games," he discussed how to handle latency, which can be the difference between a fun and responsive experience, or a "laggy" and frustrating one. He presented several examples of latency problems and their solutions, including seeing a bullet shoot too late and jumpy movements when viewing another player's character. His solutions focused on various smoothing algorithms, and he also revealed some tricks that can be used to minimize the effects of latency.
