ElectroServer Load Tested to Support 330,000 Concurrent Users on a Single Server from Softlayer
October 12, 2011
10-oct-electroserver5Often one of the first questions people ask about ElectroServer is, "How many concurrent players can it support?" To answer that question, we recently performed a series of load tests covering a variety of application types. All of the tests were run against a single game server provided by our friends at Softlayer Technologies (industry standard x86 machines, 24-core 4 x 6 CPU). We took pains to ensure that the tests were as "real world" as possible, which included writing detailed game logic and simulations for the server to validate. The results? ElectroServer demonstrated that it can support 330,000 concurrent users (CCU) in a turn-based game, 200,000 CCU in a casual MMO game, and 6,500 CCU in a first-person shooter. To learn more about our methodology and results, read our white paper. You can also see what Softlayer is saying about the tests on their blog.

Case Study: Why Aquiris and Aeria Games Chose ElectroServer5 for Unity 3
November 19, 2010
unity_logo_rectAeria Games, a leading worldwide publisher of interactive entertainment, and Aquiris Game Studio have announced that they are releasing the world’s first massively multiplayer online first-person shooter (MMOFPS) built on the Unity 3 game engine. Aeria Games and Aquiris selected ElectroServer5 to power the game’s real-time multiplayer action across platforms. Aquiris CTO Mauricio Longoni explains why.

Electrotank (ET): What gave you confidence that you could trust your game to ElectroServer?

Mauricio Longoni (ML): Compared to other available tools, ElectroServer provided a lot more built-in features and is much more flexible. The fast response from Electrotank’s support team was also decisive. And the fact that ElectroServer has been around for so long gave us and our publisher a great deal of confidence. ElectroServer is a proven tool for real-time multiplayer games and has been great to work with.

ET: What were your top reasons for choosing ElectroServer?

ML: We were looking for a game server that could give us solid performance with a large number of concurrent users. We got a lot of comfort from looking at the other types of projects that use ElectroServer. The product has been around for many years and is a proven solution for massively multiplayer applications. This gave us confidence in the server and was the main reason we chose ElectroServer over Photon or even Smartfox.

There are many other reasons why we chose ElectroServer: Unity3D support, UDP, ease of setup and deployment, ease of development, and tons of built-in features (ones that are useful!).

ET: What features unique to ElectroServer did you find to be particularly useful?

ML: One word, EsObject. Being able to transmit information via a pack that can contain almost any type of data is great. The server’s EsObject class saves us a lot of work when packing info to send across network. This kind of technology is a great way of handling interoperability between Unity3D’s C# client and the Java-based server.

ET: In terms of ease of use, what were the advantages of ElectroServer?

ML: Being able to develop server extensions in Java is a huge advantage. Some of the server features also come to mind, like the ability to create rooms, games, and zones straight out of the box. It was great to be able to rely on the tools provided with ElectroServer so we could focus on developing our game logic. Without ElectroServer we would have spent a lot more time creating a server system and developing tools not directly related to our game.

ET: What were the advantages in terms of performance and reliability?

ML: ElectroServer has a very low memory signature, which makes everyone on our development team happy. Our server has very low CPU usage, too. We have also seen firsthand how ElectroServer is able to handle lots of exceptions without failing. The only time we need to shut down the server is when we want to deploy or change a server extension. ElectroServer runs 24/7 without problems.

ET: How important was the quality of engineering support Electrotank was able to provide?

ML: Getting fast answers to our questions from Electrotank’s engineers has been one of the most important “features” of ElectroServer. We have been able to report bugs and discuss technical challenges directly with the people who built the server. And the answers we received from Electrotank’s experts were always straight to the point. This allowed us to resolve our issues very quickly and without affecting our project’s work flow.

ET: How do you feel about ElectroServer’s remote Admin tools compared to others?

ML: The interface is so complete that we could start developing server extensions right away without developing any kind of server control tool. Being able to upload extensions to the server from inside the Admin tool is one of the ES Admin’s greatest features. Logs and ability to see running Zones/Rooms/Users/Variables are a close second. The ES Admin is a great tool for controlling a server remotely.

How to Get Started with ElectroServer and Unity 3
November 19, 2010
unity_logo_rectLearning how ElectroServer works with Unity 3 is easy. Our engineers have put together a wealth of material to help get you started.

First, ElectroServer comes with full game demos, source code included. We are working to make these prettier, but as is they serve as very useful prototypes for the types of games you can build using ElectroServer5.

We have also put together more than a dozen video tutorials covering client- and server-side implementations of ElectroServer5's capabilities. These add to the tutorials and more than 40 examples you can find in the ElectroServer5 manual, along with our full C# API documentation.

“As a platform, EUP’s speed and ability to scale open up loads of new possibilities for creating online worlds,” Mr. Gold said. “And the real driving idea behind the Tool Suite was to provide creative teams, both big and small, the ability to fully exploit that potential.” EUP has been licensed to create more than a dozen custom, full featured virtual worlds for customers such as Ubisoft, Mattel, and MTV, among others. EUP is an extension of Electrotank’s high performance game socket server, ElectroServer, which powers some of the most successful online virtual worlds, such as Meez, Neopets, and WebKinz.

The EUP Tool Suite (an Adobe AIR app) is an easy-to-use interface to EUP that gives creative teams the ability to integrate, edit, and manage vast amounts of game content, such as virtual world maps and interactive items, avatars and animations, quests and crafting, and numerous other features.

“We have a great deal of experience building multi-platform games and worlds, and we know from experience that sometimes you have to look far and wide to find the best talent,” Mr. Gold added. “So we also wanted the Tool Suite to be just as useful for teams that might not be collaborating within the same office, or the same time zone for that matter.”

The EUP Tool Suite was built using the Flex 4 framework, Flash Builder 4, and Adobe AIR.

To learn more about EUP and the EUP Tool Suite, come see a live demo at some of the upcoming conferences that Electrotank will be attending in Santa Clara, CA, and Austin, TX.

Electrotank Universe Platform Debuts Advanced Crafting System for Creating Virtual Goods
October 31, 2009
09-nov-adv-crafting-sys Using Electrotank's EUP technology, developers can now take advantage of a highly customizable, extensible Crafting System. Crafting is the ability of avatars to create items in-world, and EUP’s new system allows avatars to invoke “recipes” they have purchased or earned to create clothing and other virtual world objects, if they possess the right ingredients. Specific recipes can be tied to an avatar type, and if desired, recipes can be restricted based on the avatar’s proximity to virtual world objects. For example, if an avatar moves close to a blue berry bush, a recipe for blue dye (requiring blue berries) could pop up.
